How does CoolSculpting® work?

CoolSculpting® works through a process called cryolipolysis, which uses controlled cooling to freeze and destroy fat cells in targeted areas of the body. During the procedure, a specialized applicator is placed on the skin, which delivers cooling to the fat layer without damaging surrounding tissues. The cold temperature freezes fat cells, causing them to break down. Over the following weeks, the body naturally eliminates these dead fat cells through the lymphatic system, resulting in a reduction of fat in the treated area. CoolSculpting® is non-invasive, requires no anesthesia, and has minimal downtime.

What areas can be treated with CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is FDA-approved to treat several areas of the body where stubborn fat tends to accumulate. These areas include the abdomen, flanks (love handles), thighs, double chin, upper arms, back fat, bra fat, and underneath the buttocks (banana roll). It’s particularly effective for people who are near their ideal weight but struggle with pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss solution but a body contouring treatment designed to target specific areas.

What are the side effects of CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is generally well-tolerated, but there are some mild side effects that patients may experience. These can include temporary redness, swelling, numbness, bruising, and tingling in the treated area. These effects are usually short-lived and resolve within days to weeks after the procedure. In rare cases, some people may experience a delayed onset of pain or a condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), where the treated area becomes firmer and larger instead of smaller. This is a rare complication that can be corrected with further treatment, typically liposuction.

How many CoolSculpting® treatments are needed?

The number of CoolSculpting® treatments needed depends on the individual and the area being treated. Most patients see noticeable results after one or two treatments. However, some may require additional sessions to achieve their desired outcome. Each session can reduce fat in the treated area by up to 20-25%, so if more reduction is desired, follow-up treatments can be scheduled. Your provider will create a customized treatment plan during your consultation to determine the number of sessions based on your body contouring goals. Results appear gradually over 1 to 3 months as the body eliminates the fat cells.
